Care Home Open Day marked with commemorative video

Company news

When you have a record number of care homes taking part in Care Home Open Day it seems only right that the occasion should be recorded for all to see.

With this in mind, Care UK set out to record as many of its 106 Care Home Open Day events as possible and this has now been unveiled as a new film launched this week. Each home team had planned its own unique, fun-filled celebration with input from residents and their friends and families.

Some events were inspired by the Queen’s 90th birthday year, with street parties, celebratory afternoon teas, royal-themed cake competitions, 1940’s dances and screenings of the Coronation.

Others hosted their own carnival party in honour of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, and guests and residents enjoyed activities including armchair Olympics, sports day-style races, Brazilian food and a limbo competition.

Hannah Lee from Care UK’s Colchester-based support team helped to make the film possible. She said: “The film of the day’s events demonstrates the laughter and enjoyment that filled the homes – from dancing to dog shows, donkeys and barbecues – there was plenty to entertain.

“It also shows how so many different generations and local communities came together with shared aims of celebration and having fun. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I hope this film will bring back many happy memories for the thousands of residents, relatives, colleagues and local people who came along.”

On the day, care home teams put on Punch and Judy shows, magicians, balloon modelling, stilt walkers and face painters to entertain the younger members of the community; whilst live music and dancing, featuring everything from school choirs to ukulele bands, helped the parties to go with a swing. Many homes also welcomed guests of the four (or more) legged varieties, with donkeys, snakes, spiders, ponies and dogs all joining in the celebrations.
