The Terrace shortlisted for national award

Home news

The Terrace is celebrating after being shortlisted for a national industry award.

The Terrace, in Maison Dieu, has been shortlisted in the Best for Nutrition, Food and Dining category at the national Care Home Awards. The accolade recognises the team’s commitment to providing the best dining experience possible, ensuring a genuine family atmosphere.

The Care Home Awards are held annually to celebrate the very best people in the long-term care sector, culminating in a ceremony on Wednesday 27thJune. The 17 categories highlight excellence within the care sector, and reward those who work tirelessly to provide consistently outstanding care.

The home has a highly qualified head chef, Caroline Mawhinney, who has been recognised in the care sector for both her culinary and interpersonal skills. Caroline adopts a personalised approach to the food her team prepares, tailoring dishes to residents’ personal tastes and dietary requirements. For instance, she recently created a moderated bourbon biscuit for a resident who couldn’t eat them anymore and likes to interact with residents at meal times, often serving the meals herself.

The team has also created an attractive and relaxed dining environment, which ensures the needs of all residents are met, including those living with dementia, dysphagia and those with limited mobility.

The team at The Terrace ensures residents are involved in meal times to encourage a strong sense of purpose. Residents are always welcome to assist in the kitchen should they wish to, and the home has its own tomato and herb gardens for the residents to look after.

Nicola Wilkins, home manager at The Terrace, said: “We are really honoured to have been shortlisted for Best Nutrition, Food or Dining Experience at the Care Home Awards.

“We take great care to provide balanced and nutritious dishes, and we regularly consult with residents. Recently, they’ve asked for ‘good Yorkshire food’ rather than world cuisine, so we have been focusing on this to make sure our menu reflects their tastes and preferences.

“Caroline works extremely hard to provide dishes that are not only nutritionally balanced, but also enjoyable to eat, and the team takes time to create a dining environment that is welcoming and relaxed.”
