At Silversprings care home in Thorrington, near Colchester, we offer a wide choice of group and one-to-one activities, which are all based around residents’ individual interests and needs.
We encourage residents to take part in the day-to-day life of the home in any way they want to - it’s something we call Activity Based Care. Many people love to feed the ducks that we have in our gardens, and we often see the peacock in summer months. We also make the most of our fantastic location in Thorrington, close to the Essex coast, with lots of trips to the seaside in the summer months.
Activities for everyone
Regular activities in the care home include arts and crafts, gardening, baking and gentle exercise classes. We also have a book club for residents who enjoy a good read. Everyone has a great time when the Pets As Therapy dogs come to visit us and we host performances from professional entertainers at least once a month.

We like to get out and about in the local area as much as possible, with outings to places of interest such as Colchester Castle, Beth Chatto Gardens and St Botolph’s Priory. Being in Thorrington, we’re also just a few miles away from some lovely seaside towns, so in warm weather we explore Clacton-on-Sea, Frinton-on Sea and Walton on the Naze.
Enjoying good food
Mealtimes at Silversprings are always very sociable occasions. We offer a high quality dining experience, with daily menus on display to make it easy for people to choose what they’d like to eat. We also serve homemade cakes and biscuits every morning and every afternoon.
Services and support
Two local GP practices can come to Silversprings whenever a doctor is needed and we also have regular visits from chiropodists, opticians and a reflexologist. We open up our hair salon one day each week, when two hairdressers come in to offer appointments. Residents are also very welcome to invite their regular hairdressers to use our salon at any time.
A local Church of England church holds a service at the care home every other week and representatives from other places of worship will also visit and spend time with residents. We support residents who want to attend services in the community too.
A part of the community
Silversprings is very much a part of the local community. We lend our support to events taking place in Thorrington and the surrounding areas, and local Scottish and country dancing groups regularly come to the home to entertain us all with some lively music and dancing.
