About CATS
CATS is a new way of working for the NHS. It stands for Clinical Assessment & Treatment Services (CATS). Instead of going to your local hospital outpatient service for tests or treatments or therapies, your GP may refer you to your local CATS service. A CATS service can be provided via your GP practice or sometimes via a mobile health unit. This treatment centres service is funded by the NHS but run by a private specialist care provider, like Care UK.
Why is the NHS developing CATS?
The NHS wants to reduce waiting times for diagnosis and treatment. By referring you to your local CATS instead of the hospital outpatients department you will have less waiting time, your tests will be assessed quickly and your results will come back to yourself and your GP much faster than if you had gone to hospital. In some cases, if different tests are needed, you can have them there and then without having to go on another waiting list with your local hospital.
Do I have to use CATS?
We understand that some patients might feel more comfortable with the familiarity of their local hospital. That's fine. You will always have the choice and your GP should ensure you have been given information and options to help you make the choice that's right for you.
Is CATS free?
Yes. Although CATS treatment centres are provided by specialist companies like Care UK the service is commissioned and funded by the NHS, so your care is free.
Is the standard of care the same?
Absolutely. CATS services have to meet the same high standards as other NHS services. All clinicians have to be registered with the same professional bodies as their NHS colleagues.
