Case study - Ken's story
Convenient treatment at new NHS Walk-in Centre
When Ken Johnson from Walkerville, Newcastle, suffered from an infected bite on his leg, he chose the Newcastle Central NHS Walk In Centre for his primary health care treatment.
The NHS Walk-In Centre, which opened in May 2006 to provide primary health care, is operated by Care UK on behalf of the NHS.
Mr Johnson is happy with the medical treatment he has received. He said “I chose to go to the Walk-In Centre because it was easy to get medical treatment without an appointment, and the advice I was given was immediate.”
He added “The service I received was prompt, re-assuring and very helpful.”
Mr Johnson received medical treatment for his infected bite and was given antibiotics to fight the infection. He has now made a full recovery.
The Newcastle Central NHS Walk-In Centre is one of a number of commuter Walk-In Centres designed to provide primary health care within a few minutes walk of popular commuter stations. It offers the same range of high quality services patients traditionally receive from a GP practice, but without the need for an appointment and is more conveniently located for commuters. The centre is also open to local residents.
The centre is run by a team of experienced nurses, an emergency care practitioner and two GPs.
