Crisis care

What we do:

We understand that young people in crisis often need structured time out to give them time to reflect and make sense of the circumstance is their life.  Care UK offers an excellent crisis care resource that allows children and young people the space and structure to manage these crisis events appropriately.

Our services are designed around young people and our facilities neither look nor feel like children's homes.

We do this by:

  • Creating the feeling of an outdoor education centre where young people are more like participants on an intensive adventure activity course than 'looked after children'.
  • Providing a same day response to referring authorities without any dilution of referral information, risk assessments and Placement, Care & Health Plans.
  • Using a multidisciplinary approach that combines outdoor activities, education, care and psychotherapy.
  • Help children in Crisis to develop and reintegrate into ongoing education.

How we do it:

  • We achieve continuity through our three-month stay.
  • Staff ratios to young people are high, typically 3:2, with the facility for 2:1 within the standard fees.
  • Each young person has their own staff team allocated on each shift, with their own vehicle.
  • Each young person has a purposeful and challenging daily routine tailored to their individual needs.
  • The availability of voluntary counselling either through our own team of psychotherapists or outside agencies where appropriate.

Our success:

  • Feedback from young people and staff tell us that the service is valued and effective.
  • Within the three-month stay, we can stabilise behaviour quickly, establish an educational routine and carry out specialised assessments.
  • We encourage and achieve the development of trust, which helps our young people to form attachments.
  • We have a disruption rate in placements of less than 1%.

Credentials:

  • We have what is believed to be the broadest licence granted in the UK by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority.
  • All outdoor instructors are trained within the remit of the National Governing Body Awards.
  • All members of staff undertake comprehensive child care training, including City and Guilds and NVQs.
  • All our psychotherapists are accredited practitioners with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.
