Eating disorders - treatment facilities

Eating disorders - treatment facilities

Located in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Althea Park Specialist Service provides care, therapy and education to adolescents and adult women with histories of eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia.

Althea Park takes a unique approach to the treatment of these disorders, based on a holistic model that ensures that each individual is valued and regarded as an essential partner in their own recovery process. Treatment for anorexia and other eating disorders takes place at three specialist centres:

Althea Park House offers up to 8 residential placements and 4 day placements for medium to long term therapeutic rehabilitative care of girls with eating disorders. Treatment takes place in a large, but homely detached Victorian property. It is furnished to ensure a non-institutional environment. There is an on-site education service. The project offers on-going therapeutic care for girls, 13- 21+ with Anorexia Nervosa and Bulimia Nervosa, as well as other eating problems.

Ellencroft is a 'move on' facility for clients aged 18+, who require a safe, nurturing and therapeutic environment in which to develop independent living skills and continue their journey towards recovery. Following treatment for anorexia or other eating disorders, not all clients find it easy, or appropriate, to return to their family or home area prior to complete recovery. Although their needs may not be such as to require the intensive support of Althea Park House, on-going eating disorders treatment may still be required in a more supportive and environment than their own or their family home. A more gradual transition to an independent life may sustain recovery from conditions such as anorexia nervosa and avoid 'revolving door' admissions.

Newcombe House is housed in a large, architect-designed detached house, offering a spacious interior, pleasant gardens and easy public transport access into town. Each person has their own room. The project provides a safe, nurturing and caring environment, particularly for young women who have had histories of self-injury, as well as suicidal and para-suicidal behaviour. They may also have experienced other difficulties, including eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa.
