I joined Amberley Lodge as a Senior Nurse back in 2016. Prior to moving to Care UK I had been a Nursing Unit Manager. I was keen to work for Care UK because of its great reputation. It’s a well-established organisation and it has a very clear vision for the care it strives to deliver to residents.

I’ve seen that vision in action at Amberley Lodge: we achieved an ‘outstanding’ CQC rating in 2018, and it was fantastic to be part of the team that achieved that. Becoming the home’s Manager is definitely a career highlight for me.

I always look forward to the time I can get away from my desk and spend with residents and colleagues. It reminds me why I love what I do. Amberley Lodge definitely feels like a family home, and I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start my managerial career. The support and warmth that the team receives from families, residents and each other is incredible. It’s one of the many reasons why I’m here.

Away from work, I love to cook, especially for my family. I find it a great way to unwind, along with spending time with a few close friends.

I started working for Care UK in January 1999. I’d always wanted to work in care and it was a great organisation to work for. I’ve been here a long time but I’m always learning something new, which I love. Care UK provides superb training and development, and I’ve done various qualifications.

I love interacting with residents, whether it’s in the morning or afternoon. Seeing them smiling and laughing is amazing and is the reason why I love my job. To be good in this role, you need a genuine passion for great care, for supporting people to live their best life and to be prepared to adapt and try something new.

We’re like one big family at Amberley Lodge – some of us have worked here for twenty years. We’re all committed to the residents and to supporting each other.

Shellie Rochoy - Business Administrator - Care UK

When I decided that I wanted a career helping others, I applied to Care UK because it is one of the leading care providers in the country. I joined as a Care Assistant. Before this I’d been a volunteer at a cancer support centre and at a local school while I was bringing up my daughters.

It was a highlight to make the move into this Business Administrator role. There’s lots to get my teeth into, but there’s nothing better than spending time with residents or colleagues working out how we can make each day wonderful for everyone. The residents and their stories always make me smile.

In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my daughters, and being outdoors walking or running. I’ve even completed the Brighton half marathon!

Harry Sharrard - Maintenance Manager - Care UK

I’ve worked in the building, maintenance and engineering sectors since 2002. It’s all useful experience as you never know what skills you’ll need to call upon during a working day. I joined the Amberley Lodge team in 2018.

There are always little jobs to do, as well as general redecorating. It’s important to keep the home looking good for the residents as well as their families. It also makes Amberley Lodge a nice place to work for colleagues. I always enjoy doing my checks around the home; residents’ safety is fundamental to my role here, so making sure everything’s working well is very satisfying. 

I believe in going the extra mile for residents and colleagues. I don’t really think twice about it, although it was great to be recognised with a ‘highly commended’ at the Care Home Awards in 2019.

Janet Janes - Team Leader - Care UK

I’ve been working for Care UK for over twenty years but I still get so much out of my role and working at Amberley Lodge! I began as a Care Assistant and have worked my way up, taking advantage of all the great training and development that the organisation offers.

In my role it’s important to be a good listener and team player with great communication skills. You need to understand residents’ and families’ needs so you can work to meet and exceed them. Being organised and resilient is also key.

The best part of any day is the time I get to spend with residents one-to-one. You can see the huge difference you can make to a person’s day, which is hugely rewarding.

I’m a Registered Nurse and I joined Care UK in late 2001 because it’s got such a great reputation. I wanted to make a difference to people’s lives and work in a place where I’d be supported to learn and develop.

One of the best aspects of my job is being able to support residents to live a happy and fulfilled life. Every day brings its own challenges and complexities, but I love the variety and working alongside such a great team who all have the best interests of the residents at heart.

I’m proud of having worked my way from being a Care Assistant to a Nurse Practitioner and now a Unit Manager. It was also amazing to be nominated for Nurse of the Year a few years ago. As a team we’ve also gained some fantastic achievements and have so much to be proud of, including our ‘outstanding’ rating from the CQC and platinum status for our end of life care.

Before I joined Care UK I was a support worker in a sheltered housing complex, but I did a placement at Amberley Lodge as part of the study for my Health and Social Care qualifications, so I was keen to return at some point. I joined the team in late 2005.

I think if you love your job, everything else will fall into place. I’m passionate about caring for other people, and I take pride in being reliable, committed and patient. I always feel a sense of achievement at the end of a shift when I know I’ve had a positive impact on a person’s day. I look forward to seeing residents each day, and particularly when I’ve had a day off – I wonder what they’ve been up to and how they are.

So many of my colleagues at Amberley Lodge have become good friends. In fact, I now can’t imagine working without them.
