The warm and inclusive atmosphere at Appleby House, and our creative activities, have been transformational for some residents.
The lifestyle team at Appleby House, supported by our creative and innovative home manager, Shona, sets the standard in delivering fulfilling social distanced activities and experiences. In fact, we’re often nominated for local and national awards – and win them!
However, every colleague who works here understands the difference they can make to a resident’s life. Our CQC report says, “We saw staff spending time with people on a one-to-one basis doing word searches, looking at photographs or just chatting and enjoying each other’s company.”
Art is at the heart of our care home
A creative approach to all aspects of care is at the heart of the ethos of our Epsom care home. The CQC report quotes how, “staff were well trained and skilled at supporting people living with dementia to lead independent, active and fulfilling lives. People had numerous opportunities to participate in new activities and were encouraged to share and continue with existing hobbies.”
When we started our art sessions with the team at Creative Minds a while ago, we had no idea we would go on to create our own art studio and gallery, forge strong friendships with the local primary school children doing intergenerational art projects, or have our work exhibited in various local shows. But we’ve done all that and more! Residents have created different art installations around the home, and one lady, who is living with dementia, loves creating art so much, she has rediscovered her voice and helps others with her sessions.
Every resident has a voice
Appleby House is a true home from home, where residents’ voices are heard. When residents told us they wanted some home pets, we adopted two guinea pigs. And when a gentleman said he would love to revamp our gardens, we gave him free rein, adding plants and flowers, raised flower beds and a potting shed.
All residents are encouraged to socialise within small, socially distanced groups within the home and garden where they are welcome to relax or join in with an activity.
Promoting a dementia-friendly community in Epsom
Appleby House as embraced new technology, helping to keep residents in contact with loved ones, organising virtual entertainment, and even helping to make some new friends in the local community too.
Through Shona’s energy and vision, Appleby House has become a leading light in the Epsom and Ewell Dementia Action Alliance, and we’re helping to make Epsom a dementia-friendly community. Our superb relationships with the local community, and with healthcare professionals was mentioned in our CQC report, which quotes a professional as saying, “We signpost clients to Appleby House if they are looking for dementia care for themselves or a family member, with a highly recommended label attached!”
