I’ve been working in the health and social care sector since 2007, and I became a Home Manager in 2015. I moved to Care UK in 2020 because I was keen to work in a new environment and have a fresh challenge. I’d been the Registered Manager in a dementia care setting. I did some research about Care UK, and when a position came up, it looked like a great opportunity.
The highlights of my role include spending quality time with all of the residents, supporting the team to succeed, and working closely with my team and with people in the local community to deliver successful events and experiences for the residents.
Ultimately, everything we do is about improving residents’ quality of life and making a difference to them. I’m looking forward to using my experience and knowledge to do more of the same at Cumberland.
I joined Care UK in 2008 straight from school because I’d heard great things about the organisation and I wanted to be a part of it. I started out as a domestic but, over time, I’ve been given the opportunity and support to develop my skills and explore different roles within the home to find my niche.
As a Business Administrator it’s important to be flexible, have a positive attitude and be approachable. I enjoy speaking to people from different professions, and being able to develop relationships with residents and their families and help them in any way I can.
Another highlight of working at Cumberland was when I was Lifestyle Lead. I loved planning and delivering all the events we held. It gave me a great sense of achievement.
I joined the team at Cumberland in 2019. I’d worked in other residential and care settings, and I was keen to work with older people – I used to work in, and manage, children’s homes. Care UK has a great reputation and has a clear vision of care. It was the kind of place I wanted to work!
I think a good lifestyle lead needs to have passion, creativity, patience and the ability to include all the home team in delivering a meaningful lifestyle for residents. It’s been a challenge for me adapting to what’s a very new type of role for me, but it’s been very rewarding.
One of my favourite parts of the day is when I’m doing activities with residents or I’m having a chat with individual people. Seeing them enjoying themselves and feeling valued is amazing. My aim is to make as many people smile as possible each day.
Before joining the team at Cumberland I was working in hotel maintenance in Central London. When I saw this opportunity it seemed like an exciting new challenge and my skills and knowledge would make me a good fit for it. I wanted to do a role where I could benefit residents and colleagues in the home.
Making the move to Care UK has been a great move for me. It’s very different from working in a hotel! As well as good maintenance skills, it’s important to have a caring nature in this role, and you need to be good at juggling tasks and getting things done.
I enjoy spending time with the residents and getting them involved in my tasks. They enjoy being useful and perhaps doing tasks that they might have done in their own working lives. It’s also a good feeling to know that the work I’m doing is helping to keep them safe.
I joined the Cumberland team in the summer of 2018 – I’d been in a similar role with another care provider but I was keen for a fresh challenge.
While it goes without saying that you need to be a good chef to do this role, it’s important that you can lead too.
I’m very proud of the team I have here at Cumberland. We work together well and we’re very focused on fulfilling residents’ dietary needs while ensuring they love the food we produce. We’re part of a much bigger home team too, but we all share a dedication to residents’ health and wellbeing.
I joined Care UK in May 2020 because it’s a great company and I’d heard good things about it. What’s important in my role is an attention to detail. The smallest things make the difference to residents and they really do notice them, so it’s important to focus on the details and get them right.
I love having the chance to interact with the residents, and there’s lots of opportunity to do so in this role. I have a chat with them as I’m cleaning their room, and I learn more about them and their life, and how they like things done.
I was a Staff Nurse in the NHS before I joined the Cumberland team in 2019. Care UK’s mission and vision really chimed with my own personal values, and I wanted to be part of the team.
I thrive on supporting the Nurses out on the floor of the home each day, as well as helping the Home Manager to enhance the quality of the care we provide in different ways.
It’s quite a change to move from nursing in the NHS to being a Deputy Home Manager in a care home, but I’m enjoying the challenge and the chance to get to know residents and their families and build strong relationships.
The best thing about what I do is seeing the smiles on residents’ faces – it’s why we do what we do.
