Care UK’s specialist in dementia care in the running for two major national awards

November 11th 2020

A passionate advocate for improving the life of people living with dementia, has been shortlisted for two top national awards for the work she has done to support the delivery of excellent dementia care across Care UK’s 125  homes.

Suzanne Mumford Care UKRegistered Nurse Suzanne Mumford has been shortlisted in both the Best Dementia Care Practitioner category of the National Dementia Care Awards, which recognise the very best in dementia care across the social care sector, and the Care Leadership category of the National Care Awards which are the longest established annual awards for the care sector. These awards highlight excellence and reward those who work tirelessly to provide consistently outstanding care.

Her approach to care and leadership not only focuses on the quality of life for residents living with dementia but also the impact it can have on their loved ones. Her lifetime of experience combined with her deep-rooted nursing skills and her caring and empathetic nature sees her treat every resident and their family as individuals – resulting in her recognition for these prestigious awards.

Suzanne has made many positive improvements since joining Care UK in 2018. She has created a small team to support her in ensuring that Care UK’s ambitious dementia training – in partnership with the Association for Dementia Studies (ADS) at the University of Worcester – is achieving the best outcomes for residents and the care teams who are delivering their personalised care.

Passionate about the quality of life for people living with dementia, Suzanne continuously explores new ways to improve health and wellbeing and has recently introduced Namaste care. This type of care integrates compassionate nursing care with individualised sensory activities. It has huge benefits in enabling people living with advanced dementia to feel recognised as individuals and it has dramatically improved residents’ health and wellbeing.

Suzanne has shown an outstanding ability to adapt quickly and deliver whatever has been needed during the unprecedented months since coronavirus arrived in the UK. She has supported care home teams throughout the pandemic with virtual training and helped care teams in supporting residents to still live fulfilling lives whilst shielding by establishing a range of in-house activities that have helped offset the loss of visits and external entertainers.

On speaking about her awards recognition, Suzanne said: “The creation of the approach to care team has seen much positive change - colleagues in our homes have a greater understanding of what it’s like to live with dementia, which has led to more meaningful engagement between them and residents.

“I am proud to be able to support Care UK’s determination to lead the way in dementia care and I am committed to exploring new ways of providing support that have a positive impact on fulfilling residents’ lives, such the development of Namaste practitioners in every Care UK home.

“This has been such an intense year for everyone living and working in care homes, supporting our teams with practical guidance to help them to meet the diverse needs of residents and families across Care UK has been both an honour and humbling in equal measure.

“I am thrilled to have made it to the finals for two such major awards and would like to congratulate my fellow colleagues who are finalists too.”

Care UK has also been shortlisted in five other categories at the National Dementia Care Awards and four other categories at the National Care Awards:

Suzanne, along with the other Care UK finalists, will be finding out if they have won at the virtual awards ceremonies on Thursday 12th November 2020 and Wednesday 25th November 2020.
