American choir sings its way to Murrayside

July 24th 2019

Murrayside welcomed some transatlantic visitors for a special musical performance.

Murrayside opened its doors to the North Valley Chorale for an afternoon of folk music.

The popular 35-man strong choir, originating from Phoenix, Arizona, is currently touring Europe for a limited number of exclusive performances, including Stirling Castle and D-Day celebrations in Normandy, France.

On the day, the choir treated the residents to a number of traditional Scottish, Irish and American folk pieces, including “Home on the Range” and the traditional “Ten Gallon Hat”, both of which started a lively sing-along at the home.

After the performance, the singers joined residents and team members to share their stories and experiences.

Murrayside home manager, Michelle Reid, said: “We were thrilled when the North Valley Chorale contacted us to arrange a special performance for residents. Music can have many therapeutic benefits for older people, especially those living with dementia, by offering them a way to communicate and express themselves, while also triggering happy memories from their younger years – and singing traditional Scottish songs was the perfect way to do so.

“We’d like to say a big thank you to the North Valley Chorale for an unforgettable afternoon of folk music, and we hope to see them again when they next travel across the pond.”

Murrayside care home opened its doors in October 2018, offering a wide range of personalised care services for older people, including residential, nursing and specialist dementia care.
