Bury St Edmunds care home opens village shop for residents

October 24th 2016

Residents at Davers Court care home have taken a trip down memory lane following the opening of an old-fashioned village shop.

Davers Court invited regional director, Phillip Steyn, to officially open the fun, new nostalgic store. Stocked with traditional confectionery, books, stationery and toiletries, the shop even has its own vintage-style record player for residents to enjoy whilst they enjoy their new space.

Davers Court residents work at the shop to encourage independence as part of an ongoing project to provide a dementia-friendly environment at the care home. The familiar surroundings are designed to spark fond memories and create an enjoyable environment for family and friends visiting the care home.

Wendy Harvey, home manager at Davers Court, said: “We are delighted to have opened the doors to our very own village shop, with its traditional look and feel, it has created a buzz around the care home and it is fast becoming a hub of activity here at Davers Court.

“What’s more, residents are really benefiting from the responsibility of running their own store, as well as having the independence to purchase their own essentials and not have to rely on others.

“It has also been a valuable reminiscence project. Capturing and preserving memories can trigger an emotional response that can effectively help someone living with dementia by creating a sense of familiarity and comfort while feeling that they remain part of the outside world.”

Every day at the Davers Club day care centre starts with a group coffee morning when our team and club members get together to share what they’ve been up to. Then club members are welcome to do what they fancy, playing Scrabble, having a sing-song or helping in the garden. Themed activities around annual events and days are always popular too, and a lovely chance to reminisce.
