Edinburgh care home residents take birdwatch weekend to the nest level

February 13th 2020

OWLS LAUDER LODGE23Residents at a care home in Edinburgh celebrated Britain’s best birds as part of the world’s largest garden wildlife survey – and it was a flying success!

This year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch inspired activities took place over the weekend and residents at Care UK’s Lauder Lodge, on Wakefield Avenue, were thrilled to celebrate the best of British birds with some exciting avian-themed activities.

As part of the celebrations, residents were joined by feathered friends from Owl Magic for a special ‘show and tell’ workshop, where residents had the chance to handle the birds and find out more about them.

The residents also had the opportunity to spot native species when they visited the Royal Botanic Gardens for an afternoon of birdwatching.

Nicole Anderson, home manager at Lauder Lodge, said: “Residents love taking part in nature-themed activities here at Lauder Lodge, and we had a lot of fun celebrating this year’s bird-themed event.

“It was great to be able to see the owls up close – you could see from the residents’ reactions just how engaged and thrilled they were – the visit proved to be a real success.

“Connecting with nature and wildlife is extremely beneficial for older people, and promotes positive social interaction, improves wellbeing and provides an opportunity for sensory stimulation. This can be great for those living with dementia, as it can conjure happy memories and the associated emotions.

“I’d like to say thank you to Owl Magic for joining us and making the day so special.”
