Horndean residents honour national hero

May 14th 2021

A Horndean care home got creative as part of a national initiative to honour Sir Captain Tom Moore.

Residents at Care UK’s Pear Tree Court, on Portsmouth Road, got involved in the ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge by creating 100 forget-me-nots.

Pear Tree Court Captain Tom 100 challenge_0The ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge was created by Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family as a way to inspire others to follow in his footsteps and let themselves be inspired by the number 100. The flowers, made of paper, were all hand-crafted by residents as a nod to the 100 laps Sir Tom Moore completed around his garden that raised millions for the NHS.

Ruth Swainsbury, a resident at Pear Tree Court, commented: “What a hero – Captain Sir Tom Moore is an inspiration to us all. We all enjoyed making the ‘forget-me-nots’ for him and the fact that he was 100 is amazing.”

In addition to the ‘forget-me-nots’, Pear Tree Court will also be donating 100 cookies specially made by the home’s chef to the Queen Alexandra Hospital’s NHS team to thank them for their hard work.

Niki Richards, Home Manager at Pear Tree Court, said: “Captain Sir Tom Moore was a beacon of light at the height of the pandemic this time last year. His 100 laps around his garden to raise funds for the NHS inspired the entire nation and gave us hope through challenging times.

“We were deeply saddened to hear of his passing earlier this year, so when his family created the ‘Captain Tom 100’ challenge in his memory, we knew we had to get involved. We have really creative residents here at Pear Tree Court, so making 100 forget-me-nots felt like a fitting tribute.

“We love seeing the flowers in display in the garden – it’s a reminder to us all to stay positive no matter what.”
