A care home in Newbury has launched a special initiative specifically designed to support and improve the lives of those living with dementia.
The Care UK team at Winchcombe Place, on Maple Crescent, held a ‘Champagne & Canape’ evening for local people to officially meet the new management team and learn more about the upcoming Namaste programme.
Namaste care, which is launching at the home throughout March, is an approach which changes the structure of care given to those with the later stages of dementia. It focuses on engaging with each individual person's senses through sound, touch, smell, taste and sight, and is a key addition to the care home’s dementia suite. As part of the new initiative, residents will be having hand massages, and practicing calming activities, such as meditation and listening to music.
Sensory stimulation is already a big focus at Winchcombe Place, where there is a dedicated music room on the dementia suite and a full program of activities. Every member of team has received specialist dementia training to ensure that the best possible care is given to all residents.
The dementia suite also features a Tovertafel, an interactive ‘magic table’, which stimulates the mind and encourages interaction across the generations. The interactive games, which are all about enjoyment and wonder, stimulate both physical and cognitive activity, encourage socialisation, and create opportunities for treasured moments with family members and carers.
Kerry Thompson, home manager at Winchcombe Place, said: “The evening was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate alongside residents, their families and our local community. The roll out of our Namaste programme is an important milestone for all of us, as it means we can offer expert care to the community of Newbury and surrounding area.
“We have built a warm, welcoming community here at Winchcombe Place, with everything we need to provide the highest standards of personalised care. We look forward to opening our home up to the community again soon.”
