Out of this world: Cavell Court residents feature in sci-fi film

Home news

Two Cavell Court residents have made their acting debut with parts in a sci-fi film created by local students.

89-year-old Derek Parke, and 66-year-old Max Warminger, from Cavell Court both volunteered to feature in a science fiction film, created by Pathways College in partnership with the care home.

The unusual collaboration was brought about by not-for-profit organisation, Eastern Region Media (ERM CIC), which specialises in intergenerational projects and working with older members of the community to educate younger people in a creative, inclusive way.

Funded by The Big Lottery Fund, Pathways students and Cavell Court residents came together to create the film, named 'Simeon Jax - Space Pilot', and were involved in every aspect of the project, from developing the characters and storyline, to helping with the design of the costumes and props.

Derek, who played the warlord in the film, and Max, who played a solider, were invited down to the film's premier at The Garage in Norwich, where they got to watch their big moment with fellow residents and students from Pathways.

Jennie Rodger, home manager at Cavell Court, said: "The collaboration with Pathways and ERM CIC began six months ago and it has been fantastic to watch the residents really get involved. I know they're all incredibly proud of what has been produced - as are all the team here.

"We had a lovely day at the film screening and it was wonderful to see everyone's hard work come to fruition. I'd like to say a big thank you to Pathways and ERM CIC for considering us for this project, and we're looking forward to welcoming the students back to Cavell Court in the near future, to build on their new relationships with the residents."
