Poole care home goes on a dementia adventure

February 13th 2015

People in Poole are invited on a dementia adventure at Care UK’s The Potteries care home on Thursday 19 February from 2-5pm.

At the free event, Neil Mapes from Dementia Adventure will be joining the team at The Potteries care home to share his knowledge and provide practical tips for those caring for someone living with dementia. Neil will help people understand the condition, learn how memories are lost and give guidance on how to overcome communication barriers.

The free event is part of an ongoing partnership between Care UK and Dementia Adventure and is designed to help family members and carers gain a clearer understanding of dementia. After the event, Neil will be on hand to answer any questions and there will be an opportunity for members of the public to meet the carers at The Potteries and take a tour of the home.

Zita Turner, home manager at The Potteries, explained why there is so much demand for the care home to provide ongoing advice for local people: “With dementia affecting 820,000 people in the UK and a startling 25 million people having a close friend or family member living with the condition, there is a real and pressing need to open up access to professional support and information, and to ensure there are places people can go where they can share their individual experiences. We are looking forward to hosting the forthcoming event with Dementia Adventure and to welcoming the local community to come along and find out more.”

People who attend the understanding dementia seminar will also be able to collect a copy of Care UK’s Listen, Talk, Connect guide which helps carers, friends and relatives to overcome any challenges they may face in having conversations and general interaction with those living with dementia.

Situated on York Road in Broadstone, The Potteries is one of Care UK’s newest homes. It provides a range of services from respite, nursing and residential care to specialist care for those living with dementia.
