Stansted care home joins forces with Stroke Association

February 26th 2015

Care UK’s Mountfitchet House care home in Stansted is teaming up with the Stroke Association for a free event designed to help local people recognise the signs of a stroke and to provide support for those who are caring for loved ones recovering from a stroke.

People in Stansted are invited to visit the care home for access to expert advice and a range of resources, which are available for those in the different stages of recovery. Tina Hughes and Beverly Reynolds from the Stroke Association will be leading the event, which will also cover how to identify the signs of a Transient Ischaemic Attack (TIA) – commonly known as a mini stroke.

After the Stroke Awareness event there will also be a chance for attendees to ask questions and share their own experiences, as well as an opportunity to talk to the team at Mountfitchet House and take a closer look at the care home.

Allison Squires, Home Manager at Mountfitchet House, explained why she believed the Stroke Awareness event was vitally important. “Statistics from the Stroke Association show a stroke occurs approximately 152,000 times a year in the UK, which means around every three and a half minutes someone in the UK is suffering from a stroke. Furthermore, it is estimated there are around 1.2 million stroke survivors in the UK and over a half of these people have a disability while a third of survivors are dependent on the care of others.

“With stroke being so prevalent, arming people with plenty of information can literally save lives and it is proven that responding quickly on recognising the signs of a stroke of TIA can help reduce damage to a person’s brain and improve their chances of a full recovery. As so many people are caring for loved ones recovering from a stroke, access to expert advice and signposting to further ongoing support can make all the difference to quality of life and future wellbeing.

“We are very pleased to be working so closely with the Stroke Association on this free event and we look forward to welcoming people in Stansted along to Mountfitchet House for what promises to be an incredibly informative, useful and engaging few hours.”

Situated on the corner of Coltsfield and High Lane, Mountfitchet House provides a range of care services for older people, including residential, nursing and specialist dementia care, as well as short-term respite, palliative, and sensitive end of life care.
