Suffolk care home launches competition to find local artist for special sculpture commission

Home news

Local artists are invited to submit their ideas for a special celebratory sculpture, to be displayed in the gardens of Glastonbury Court in Bury St. Edmunds.

The sculpture will celebrate the end of Care UK’s three-year, £60 million development project which has seen the creation of 10 new care homes and 10 new day care centres for older people across Suffolk.

The sculpture will be a permanent outdoor centrepiece at Glastonbury Court, the tenth and final new care home in the project to open in the county, and will be enjoyed by residents, colleagues and visitors for years to come. In addition to the main sculpture, the artist will also be asked to create nine small tokens or elements of the main sculpture that will be located in the other nine Suffolk Care UK homes.

Artists will need to submit their ideas for the sculpture by 31 July 2016. The winning design will be chosen by a judging panel and announced in September 2016, ready for the finished sculpture to be unveiled in the gardens at Glastonbury Court in January 2017. Care UK will provide funding for the winning artist to create and install their sculpture.

Jennie Rodger, home manager at Glastonbury Court, said: “We’re looking for a design that represents the project and its ten new care homes, whilst celebrating older people and life in later years. I'm really looking forward to meeting the winning artist and welcoming them to Glastonbury Court. It'll be exciting for residents and visitors to be able to enjoy a specially commissioned sculpture in the gardens of the care home.”
