Virtuous cycle – Care UK’s national fundraising efforts culminate at Windsor care home

Virtuous cycle – Care UK’s national fundraising efforts culminate at Windsor care homeA care home in Windsor presented national charities with a five-figure donation after taking part in a special fundraising initiative.

Care UK’s Mountbatten Grange, on Helston Lane, supported a nationwide fundraising drive through an initiative called Ride 800. This 800-mile cycle challenge saw a trio of colleagues from Care UK spend 15 days out on the road, cycling from Poole to Aberdeen – the locations of Care UK’s most southerly and northerly homes – to raise money for The Care Workers Charity, the Alzheimer’s Society and Alzheimer Scotland.

Care UK’s Andrew Knight, chief executive of residential care, Jacqui White, marketing director, and Tony Weedon, strategic programme director, visited 26 homes as part of the 800-mile cycle challenge, and Mountbatten Grange was the 4th stop on the ride. The home, which played a key part in their journey, had organised a special show for the riders, and treated them to an evening of fine dining.

Their warm welcome and special display, alongside those created by neighbouring homes, impressed the riders so much that decided to reward the West London homes with the ‘Team Work Award’. As part of the prize, Mountbatten Grange and four other homes received a special adapted bike.

The adapted bike includes two seats, one with pedals and one without, which means every resident, no matter their level of mobility, can use it with the help of a team member, allowing them to continue biking in older age. The bike has been a hit with residents so far, and they are counting the days until the weather gets warmer weather so they can get back in the saddle.

With the fundraising drive now complete, the three riders met with representatives from the Alzheimer’s Society and The Care Workers Charity to present them with the funds raised, £15,000 and £12,596 respectively, while Alzheimer’s Scotland will also receive £15,000.

Debbie Winwood, home manager at Mountbatten Grange, said: “We’re always happy to support good causes here at Mountbatten Grange, so we were delighted to help Care UK raise a five-figure sum for three important charities. The residents enjoyed supporting the cycling competition too, and even had a go, thanks to a specially-adapted bike.

“We were thrilled to welcome the riders to the home again, as well as representatives from The Care Workers Charity and Alzheimer’s Society – presenting them with the final donation was the culmination of weeks of fundraising efforts from Care UK team members across the country, and I couldn’t be prouder of the part Mountbatten Grange played.”

The luxury care home, which features 72 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
