Classes help Ponteland nursing home residents to carry on learning

Residents at Care UK's Ponteland Manor are about to start a new range of classes thanks to members of the town's University of the Third Age (U3A).  U3A will be holding a range of events and activities at the Thornhill Road home throughout the spring, including art classes, practices for a choir and a recorder ensemble, as well as gardening club meetings.

Professional carers will learn this week about a revolutionary new training method which radically increases well-being in people with dementia.On 2nd November, delegates at the National Dementia Congress at the BT Convention Centre, Liverpool, will hear the results of Care UK's pilot study into its new dementia policy. This combines ‘experiential' training - to let everyone working in a home experience the physical and emotional effects of dementia – with changes to surroundings which benefit people with dementia.

Care UK today announced that its care services in Islington have scored highly across the board in reviews by the independent regulator, the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Its Highbury New Park home, operated in partnership with the Islington Council, received the highest possible rating of “Excellent”. Elsewhere in the Borough, Lennox House near Finsbury Park demonstrated real improvement and has now achieved a “Good” status from the CQC, alongside the Muriel Street Centre in Islington, which has now also achieved a “Good” status from the CQC.

The team at Care UK's Maplestead day centre in Halstead, which opened recently, has arranged for one of its club members to visit his former fire station and meet up with colleagues he worked with 30 years ago.

The very special outing was organised for the team’s first ever day club member Maurice Norman - a retired fireman who worked in Halstead for 31 years until he retired in 1981.
