I joined Care UK, first at Catherine Court and then moving across to Oak House, in May 2018. It was recommended to me as a good organisation to work for. Prior to joining the team here I was working as a nurse at a local hospital. It’s a very different environment working in a care home. Here we have the chance to spend time with the people we’re caring for. You can get to know them – and it’s a wonderful feeling to be able to make them happy and to make a difference to their lives every day.
Becoming a care home manager has definitely been my biggest career highlight to date. It’s such a rewarding role, and every day is different. I enjoy working with the team to deliver even better care to residents, supporting relatives and helping my team to develop and achieve their potential.
I previously worked for the community of Slough and as a care assistant before I made the decision to join Care UK. I decided to work within this industry as I wanted to help support others and provide quality care.
I take pride in keeping everyone happy by arranging fun group activities or more personal one-to-one time with residents. It warms my heart to see the activities bring happiness and a sense of achievement to the people we provide care for. I have gained great relationships and I go home with the feeling I have achieved something positive every day.
My role requires a positive mindset, kindness and understanding for individual needs. Great teamwork is key in care, as well as staying organised and having a creative side to plan high quality activities and events.
I joined Care UK in 2013 as a Care Assistant. I became a Senior Carer and then a Unit Manager. Care UK is one of the best care providers and I feel that working here is a privilege. Colleagues go the extra mile to fulfil the lives of residents, and they’re rewarded with great training and career progression.
I love seeing the Oak House residents happy. The first thing I do at the start of my shift is to go and say hello to everyone. A resident’s smile brightens my day. I enjoy my job so much. I feel that I can make a difference to people’s lives: we have a laugh together and it’s always my goal to make their day as good as possible.
In my free time, I like being with my Mum, who has been the biggest role model in my life. We like going out to eat – and shopping!
I wanted to join Care UK and Oak House because the organisation has a great reputation for care and for supporting its colleagues to progress.
Since joining the home I’ve got involved in colleague recruitment, which is something I really enjoy. It’s an opportunity to build a professional relationship with every new employee who joins the home. I see their application through from beginning to end.
Ours is a big care home and there are lots of systems to learn – I’m proud of myself that I’ve learnt the ins and outs of two payroll systems! There’s always something new to learn, which I enjoy, whether it’s all about running staff rotas or doing fire training. I love the variety of each day and juggling multiple tasks.
I have two young golden retrievers, so they keep me busy outside of work. I also enjoy cycling and walking in my spare time, as well as eating out.
