The team at Priors House is passionate about enabling residents who are living with dementia to live life to the full.

Our ethos of care is all about supporting people to live well with dementia. This underpins everything we do, from the way we have designed the home, to our approach to food and dining, and the fulfilling activities we organise.

Every member of the Priors House team is committed to making each day rewarding for residents who are living with dementia. We get to know your loved one well so that every aspect of their lifestyle, care and surroundings is tailored to their needs and interests.

We see the person behind the dementia, finding ways to ensure that your loved one feels valued and enjoys a sense of purpose. Our colleagues undertake the latest dementia training and are supported by dementia champions – team members with advanced dementia knowledge who provide day-to-day advice and support for colleagues and relatives.

Enabling residents to live a fulfilling life

Our lifestyle team organises a wealth of group and one-to-one activities. Animal therapy is known for its calming benefits for people who are living with dementia, so the team organises visits from different therapy animals. We also have our own guinea pigs, which residents help to care for.

Music too is well known for its ability to improve the mood, mobility and communication skills of people living with dementia. Residents love our regular music and movement sessions, performances from professional entertainers. They’ve even formed a Priors House choir!

Residents enjoy shopping trips and lunch outings, and a ‘Gents on Tour’ group heads off to a variety of matches. Colleagues also ‘go the extra mile’ – literally – to fulfil individual residents’ wishes. Recently, residents have visited Grimsby, London and Dorset to relive happy memories.

There’s plenty to occupy residents who prefer to stay closer to home. The Priors House dementia suite has themed areas for residents to explore, including a new sensory garden room. There are regular film showings in the cinema plus pamper sessions and visits from a hairdresser and a dementia-friendly barber.

What are Priors House residents doing today?

Supporting residents with dementia to eat and drink well

Dementia can affect a person’s appetite, body clock and tastes, putting them at risk of malnutrition and weight loss. Our team takes pride in supporting residents to dine with dignity. Our chef-led kitchen team will learn all about your loved one’s favourite dishes and include them on the menu. They also cater for different dietary needs.

We use bespoke dementia-friendly crockery and cutlery and residents who are living with dementia can view plated meals so they can make an informed choice about what they want. Mealtimes are always relaxed and sociable: your loved one is welcome to eat wherever they wish and even have a meal that’s ‘off menu’ if there’s something in particular they fancy.
