I qualified in 1995 as a Registered Mental Health Nurse and I’ve largely worked in older people’s care from the start of my career. I moved into management early on in my career, and I joined Care UK over ten years ago.
I have to say that the best part of my role is spending time with the residents. I’m passionate about the importance of including them in their care and in the running of the home, and that’s one of my priorities in my role here. Having a strong team is also vital to delivering great care, so ensuring that we’ve got great people on board, and keeping them happy is also a big focus for me.
Outside of work I love to travel. One of my favourite things is to explore Scotland in my caravan and seeing where the road takes me.
I joined Care UK in 2010 because I wanted to put something back into the community in the latter part of my career. I spent 34 years as a PA in the whisky industry – a bit different from my role now – but I’ve lasted the pace and I’m still enjoying it!
Getting to know all our residents and gaining their trust has probably been the biggest challenge in my role but it’s paid dividends. The appreciation that residents and their families show me gives me such satisfaction. Working here I’ve made a difference to many people’s quality of life – including my own.
I think the best parts of my role at Wellmeadow Lodge are helping colleagues and residents’ relatives and meeting new people who come through our doors, whether it’s people visiting residents or potential residents and their families coming to have a look around. We support families throughout their loved one’s time with us, and they can go through difficult times. So you need to be patient, organised and really good with people to do this job.
Outside of work I really enjoy walking, gardening and spending time with my family and friends.
I moved to Care UK when it took over the running of Wellmeadow Lodge, but I’ve enjoyed each day I’ve worked for them. Being promoted to maintenance manager gave me extra challenge but it was a big career highlight.
We have a great manager here at the care home, as well as a great staff team. Every day is a good day. The thing I most enjoy about my role here is meeting new residents and ensuring that they have a safe and happy home to live in.
