The royal treatment – Banbury care home residents celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at two care homes in Banbury have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Seccombe Court, on Gardner Way, Adderbury, and Highmarket House, on North Bar Place, marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by hosting a special Big Jubilee Lunch.

The Big Lunch is an initiative designed to encouraged communities to celebrate their relationships and get to know each other a little better every year since it began in 2009.

Team members at Seccombe Court went all out to royally decorate the garden with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons. Residents enjoyed a royal inspired tea party, and everyone tapped their feet along to music from local DJ Bob Dainty, who played classics from across the decades.

Meanwhile, at Highmarket House residents and guests were treated to a barbecue, and everyone got into the party spirit with live music from local singer Sam Lawrence. The home also held a ceremony to unveil a jubilee arch to commemorate the special occasion.

Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of royal celebrations gone by, including one resident who helped to paint the gold gilding on the carriage in preparation for The Queen’s coronation.

Wojciech Kuczkowski, General Manager at Seccombe Court, added: “We had a wonderful time celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee with the community here at Seccombe Court.

“For older people, and those living with dementia, reminiscing about key milestones, such as previous jubilee celebrations, can help bring back happy memories, as well as prompting conversation and connection with those around them. These positive feelings gained from revisiting fond memories can help decrease stress, reduce agitation, and improve mood.

Francesca Cowley, Home Manager at Highmarket House, concluded: “We have many royalists here at Highmarket House who were keen to mark the Queen’s incredible reign and celebrate in style. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we’re already planning our next royal knees up!”
