The royal treatment – Cardiff care home residents celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at a care home in Cardiff have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Llys Cyncoed, on Cyncoed Road, has welcomed friends and family to mark the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by hosting a special afternoon tea to mark the Jubilee.

The head chef created a menu fit for a queen, including Callaloo soup, which is of Caribbean origin and is one of the Queen’s favorite dishes. A whole steamed salmon was also served along with a selection of hand carved meats, tasty side dishes and puddings.

Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of jubilee celebrations gone by, including Sheila Harris, who shared fond memories of the street party that took place for the Queen’s Coronation in 1953. She remembers every family on her street contributed one dish of homemade food which was shared between the neighbours. She enjoyed telling team members about the great atmosphere with music and dancing, as well as competitions for the children.

She said: “I am a huge admirer of Her Majesty the Queen; she is amazing for her age, and it is hard to put into words how much she has given to this country over the past 70 years.”

Virgil Frincu, General Manager at Llys Cyncoed, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee here at Llys Cyncoed.

“For older people, and those living with dementia, reminiscing about key milestones, such as previous jubilee celebrations, can help bring back happy memories, as well as prompting conversation and connection with those around them. These positive feelings gained from revisiting fond memories can help decrease stress, reduce agitation, and improve mood.

“We have many royalists here at Llys Cyncoed including Sheila who were keen to mark the Queen’s incredible reign and celebrate in style. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we’re already planning our next royal knees up!”
