The royal treatment – Chester care home residents celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at a care home in Chester have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Deewater Grange, on Chester Road, has marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by inviting family and friends for a 1950s themed street party.

Celebrating in true British style, the team at Deewater Grange went all out to royally decorate the garden with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons.

Guests were treated to a jubilee-themed barbecue spread, plus classic treats including sandwiches, sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple sticks – along with the jubilee signature platinum pudding lemon and amaretti trifle, specially prepared for the occasion by the home’s chef.

Visitors and residents also had some friendly competition as they enjoyed playing traditional party games, including ring toss, bowls and tin can alley.

Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of jubilee celebrations gone by, including 91-year-old Marie Bentley, who met the Queen during her career as a teacher and wanted to recreate a jubilee street party, as one of her memories involved a street party to celebrate the end of the War.

She said: “Meeting the Queen was a great honour, and the feeling when everyone came together to celebrate the end of the War was amazing.”

Sally Cooper, Home Manager at Deewater Grange, said: “We had a wonderful time celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee here at Deewater Grange.

“For older people, and those living with dementia, reminiscing about key milestones, such as previous jubilee celebrations, can help bring back happy memories, as well as prompting conversation and connection with those around them. These positive feelings gained from revisiting fond memories can help decrease stress, reduce agitation, and improve mood.

“We have many royalists here at Deewater Grange, including Marie Bentley who were keen to mark the Queen’s incredible reign and celebrate in style. Everyone had a fantastic time, and we’re already planning our next royal knees up!”
