The royal treatment – Quorn care home residents celebrate the Platinum Jubilee in style

Home news

Residents at a care home in Quorn have been enjoying a Platinum Jubilee celebration fit for a queen.

Care UK’s Lonsdale Mews, on Farley Way, has marked the Queen’s official 70-year milestone by inviting family and friends for a 1950s themed garden party.

Celebrating in true British style, the team at Lonsdale Mews went all out to royally decorate the garden with Union Jack flags, bunting and balloons.

Guests were treated to a 1950s inspired afternoon tea, with classic treats including strawberries and cream, scones, finger sandwiches and a Victoria sponge, all specially prepared for the occasion by the home’s chef, along with a traditional sweet trolley.

Resident Molly held a ‘Best Hat Competition’ and put her judging skills to the test. Everyone enjoyed played traditional garden games, including croquet and hoopla. There was also a ‘Pin the crown on the Queen’ game, with funds raised going to Dementia UK – all accompanied by 50s inspired live music performed by Sam Hutchinson, with team members dressed in clothes inspired by the era.

Residents have also spent time reminiscing about their own memories of royal celebrations gone by, including 93-year-old Joan, who remembers meeting the Queen when she was still a Princess at a special garden event and curtsying upon meeting her.

Toby Sturgess, Home Manager at Lonsdale Mews, said: “We loved welcoming relatives into the home to enjoy the royal treatment after so long apart!

“The Platinum Jubilee offers the perfect opportunity to get together with loved ones and celebrate the last 70 years of both the Queen, and the wonderful residents, incredible reigns. Many residents have fond memories of celebrating the silver, golden and diamond jubilees with their families and communities, and we were keen to ensure the Platinum Jubilee was no exception!

“It was amazing to have the full Lonsdale Mews family back together again after so long. Judging by the smiles on everyone’s faces, it was a huge success, and we are already planning our next get together!”
