I have worked in care since 2011 and now hold a level five diploma in health and social care. I have also completed several other courses that have helped me work my way up from care assistant through to my current role as home manager.
I chose to work for Care UK specifically, because of its commitment to providing person-centred care. As an organisation, it values continuous development, teamwork and compassion. There is also a strong framework of support for anyone that wants to progress in their career.
A good home manager must be highly organised and be genuinely committed to delivering the highest standards of care. Patience, empathy, leadership skills and excellent communication are all equally important.
There are so many highlights to my role, and I take great pride in ensuring Llys Cyncoed is a warm, inclusive and safe environment for residents and colleagues. I feel privileged that I have been promoted to manager in a home where I have grown professionally over the last ten years.
One of my favourite parts of the day is the time I spend with residents. I always make sure to join in the daily anagrams challenge. As well as testing my word-puzzle skills, interacting with residents helps me better understand the support they need.
Taking time to be with residents is also a great reminder of why I chose a career in care – which was to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
Most of my time outside of work is joyfully filled by my two young children. I enjoy reading, going for walks in nature and along the beach. I also have a newly found hobby of buying houseplants.
