National care inspectors praise ‘Outstanding’ Kingston Vale care home

Home news

A care home in Kingston Vale has been found to be delivering outstanding care by a Government inspector with relatives and residents praising its exceptionally vibrant atmosphere and positive team members.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report awarded Care UK’s Sherwood Grange, on Robin Hood Lane, ‘Outstanding’ in its level of care in two out of five categories, which included effective leadership and being responsive.

The report noted that residents received exceptional care that was tailored to their needs and wishes, and provided by caring, attentive and compassionate team members. The home's atmosphere was described as buzzing with activity and very welcoming, warm, and inclusive.

The CQC inspectors noted that kindness was embedded in the ethos of the team at Sherwood Grange. The report mentioned that during the visit there were many thoughtful acts of kindness by team members, which made a big difference to residents. Team members went out of their way to say hello, chat to family members and take an interest in everyone and what they were doing.

The team at Sherwood Grange ensures residents continue to lead active and fulfilling lives where no two days are the same – by hosting many activities, most recently a nude life drawing class and a group trip to France. One relative said "Before Mum came in here, she was very apprehensive about trying new things. Since she [arrived] she has blossomed, and now has a better social life than I do."

Team members were applauded for their exceptional care of all residents. One relative had previously emailed to say, "Thank you so much for the care and love [provided by] the manager and all the team members, and I do mean all the team, from the cook, maintenance, housekeeping, office personnel and carers. Mum was truly looked after during her time at Sherwood Grange, and her life was enhanced by everyone's tender care and love."

The home was given top marks for tailoring the care to meet the needs of individuals. The inspectors observed very well attended exercise and music classes which were vibrant and inclusive events with everyone joining in and thoroughly enjoying themselves, including residents with varying types and levels of dementia. One resident commented "Nobody is ever left out."

Rick Mayne, home manager at Sherwood Grange, said: “We are over the moon to have been given our Outstanding result. Everyone has put in a lot of hard work to ensure we offer a home-from-home to all the residents and their families, and the whole team are really proud of their achievements.

“Everything we do is for the residents and my only aim is to make their home a wonderful place to live, which also makes it a wonderful place to work. We can’t wait to properly celebrate the result with all the residents and their friends and family.”

Alison Murray, Head of Adult Social Care Inspection in London, said: “At the last inspection in 2017 CQC rated Sherwood Grange Good overall. It is very pleasing to see the home has continued to improve and can now boast an Outstanding rating.

“I was particularly impressed with the wide range of activities available to people at Sherwood Grange, and I congratulate the leadership team and all the staff that have worked hard to achieve continued advancement.”

To assess service standards at Sherwood Grange, the CQC’s inspector spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives on the day of the inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.

Sherwood Grange is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. Designed to enable residents to live enjoyable and fulfilling lives, the care home has its very own cinema and hair salon, and there is plenty of space, both indoors and out, for relaxation and recreation.
