National inspectors praise local care home

Home news

A national care watchdog has given a care home in Mitcham its seal of approval, with relatives and residents praising the team members.

The Care Quality Commission’s (CQC) report gave Care UK’s Cumberland care home, in Whitford Gardens, an overall ‘Good’ rating.

Residents, their relatives and the team all spoke positively about the way the care home is being managed since the appointment of a new home manager earlier this year.

The inspectors found that the team were quick to respond to the needs of the residents, and were keen to spend quality time with individuals. The team takes great care in understanding the wants, needs and wishes of the residents.

Inspectors commended the home manager and the management team, who received praise from their team. One team member said: “The new managers are all so energetic and are able to inspire and lead the team.”

The report highlighted that there were robust systems in place to assess and respond to risks regarding infection prevention and control, including those associated with Covid-19. For example, during the inspection, it was noted that there is signage outside the care home informing visitors of the infection control measures in place during the pandemic and individual temperatures were taken on entering the building. Hand sanitation dispensers were available throughout the home and team members had access to ample supplies of PPE, which the team wore consistently.

Sunita Aucharaz, Home Manager at Cumberland, said: “Everyone has put in a lot of hard work to ensure we offer high quality care and excellent facilities to all residents, and the whole team are really proud of this achievement.

“Receiving an ‘Good’ rating overall is testament to the hardworking team we have here at Cumberland. Our ethos is to help residents to continue living active and fulfilling lives, and it is what we aim to do day in, day out. Over the last year this has been more important than ever as we adapt to a new way of life, while ensuring residents lives remain as normal as possible.

“We are all thrilled to have received this official praise from the national inspectors.”

To assess service standards at Cumberland, the CQC’s inspector spoke with team members, residents, and their visiting relatives via phone and email prior to inspection. They also reviewed the records and procedures already in place at the care home.
