Meet our friendly care team

The dedicated and experienced team at Barton Manor provides your loved one with care that’s completely tailored to their individual needs and wishes.

Andrea Layton

Home Manager

Andrea Layton

The Barton Manor team is committed to delivering exceptional care every day. Our vision is that residents feel supported in a beautiful home with a real family atmosphere. For me, it is about improving quality of life for everyone here.

I have had previous experience as a Home Manager and have also been a palliative carer within the NHS. I have level 2,3,4 and 5 NVQs and have completed counselling skills at levels 2 and 3.

In this role, you need resilience, empathy and passion. You also need to be reliable so that people can trust and rely on you to take responsibility. Being here at the start and commissioning Barton Manor has been such a career highlight. It’s been a hard journey, but every moment has been worth it. Seeing the home grow and watching colleagues develop has been incredibly rewarding.

Walk-arounds are my favourite part of the day. It is when I get the chance to see residents and have a chat. Seeing everyone relaxed and happy, whether they’re singing, dancing or taking part in other activities, is lovely.

In my spare time I enjoy walking my two amazing Tibetan terriers. I also like to relax with family and friends.

Our Team

Sarah Dean
Sarah Dean
Deputy Manager
I have a level three NVQ in health and social care and am working towards my level five qualification.

I have also had health and safety and fire warden training, as well as training in dementia care.

In this role you need good leadership and communication skills. You also need to be reliable and have empathy.

The safety of residents and colleagues is of paramount importance to me, as is providing genuine person-centred care. The best part of the day for me is greeting residents first thing and catching up with their news.

We maintain high standards and I like to lead by example. I take real pride in my work, while also making sure I support colleagues to give them the confidence to provide excellent care.

In my spare time, I enjoy travelling, particularly to Vietnam and Thailand. I love experiencing new foods and cultures.

Jo Egginton
Jo Egginton
Activities Manager
I was a Senior Carer here before taking on my current role.

My training includes first aid, fire safety, dementia care and mental health awareness.

With any role in care, you have to be patient and kind, as well as a good listener. As Activities Manager, you also need to be creative and passionate. Being a little bit barmy helps too!

One of the best things about my job is seeing the smiles and hearing the laughter when residents get involved in the activities we plan. Creating those memories and good times is so rewarding.

A big highlight for me was when we were able to grant a resident’s wish. She wanted a motorbike gang to come and visit her, so we arranged it. It was brilliant, and she loved it – she still talks about it now.

I feel proud of the work we do. We make a real difference, and we can see that every day. Even small things often mean a lot and knowing that you can help someone, makes it all worth it. It is really about making sure people feel seen and heard.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my grandchildren. My hobbies are fishing and bingo.

Tommy Haughey
Tommy Haughey
Head Chef
I have been a Head Chef for more than 20 years, so I have decades of experience.

There have also been lots of highlights, like being the owner of the best restaurant in the area.

In this role, you need to have good organisational skills and be calm under pressure. You never know what challenges you might face on the day so being able to think on your feet is important too.

Residents’ satisfaction is important, so I enjoy talking to them and getting positive feedback on the meals we prepare. Knowing you have done your best and made people happy is always a good feeling.

In my spare time I enjoy singing rock ‘n’ roll.

Wendy Simpson
Wendy Simpson
Business Administrator
I was a Care Assistant before my current role and before that I worked in domiciliary care, but I wanted a change.

I have had lots of training to prepare me for the admin side of things and there is a lot to take in.

As a Business Administrator, you need to be organised and have good time management skills. I also think it is important to be a good communicator and have attention to detail to ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Every day is varied, so it is impossible to pick a favourite part. You never know what the day will bring until you step through the doors and get to your desk.

When I am not at work, I enjoy swimming. I also enjoy crafts like knitting, crochet and cross-stitch. My husband and I have a dog so we like going for walks and day trips.

Julie Hodson

Unit Manager
I was previously a Senior Carer and have been trained in medication, first aid, fire safety and dementia care.

As Unit Manager, you need to be able to lead and work with a team. You also need to be organised and a good communicator.

I feel really proud of the fabulous and outstanding team at Barton Manor. We have high standards of professionalism here and work hard to build solid relationships with residents and their families.

It is important to all of us to provide the very best person-centred care and to make sure residents are happy. Being able to spend time with them and have a catch up is always one of my favourite parts of the day.

I spend my time outside of work looking after my daughter. I also enjoy camping and taking part in adrenaline activities.

Sonja Spriggs

Head Housekeeper
I was a Care Assistant before, but I am enjoying my current role as Head Housekeeper.

I take great pride in working at Barton Manor, it is important to me that residents are happy.

I love doing a deep clean of the home and seeing the end result. Seeing everything sparkling is really rewarding. When I can, I also like to stop and chat with residents and make sure that everything is just as they like it.

You need to have a good sense of humour in this job. You also need good communication and organisation skills. The days are always busy so time keeping skills are also important, so is teamwork.

I enjoy spending my free time with family and catching up with friends.

Malcolm Carter

Maintenance Manager
Before joining the team at Barton Manor, I was the Maintenance Manager in a factory, so I have a lot of hands-on experience.

In this role, you definitely need to be organised and methodical to make sure that the home is a compliant and safe environment. You also need to be approachable and flexible, as well as have good communication skills. A sense of humour always helps too.

One of the great parts of the job is the interaction with residents and I enjoy being able to stop for a chat every now and again. It feels good knowing that I can make their home a safe place. A big highlight for me recently was being able to secure some funding for a shed, along with some outdoor patio furniture that everyone can enjoy.

Outside of work, my hobbies and interests are Formula One, classic cars and my lovely dog, Elsie.
