Harrow School children get crafty for new care home

May 18th 2017

Local school children have created eye-catching artwork to decorate the building site of Harrow’s newest care home.

Students from St. George’s Catholic Primary School were invited by Care UK to get creative with a piece of artwork, depicting the city of London, which is now on display on the hoardings surrounding Care UK’s Buchanan Court on Sudbury Hill.

The school’s ‘art ambassadors,’ who designed the artwork visited the site to see their drawings up on display, with the help of site contractors, Castleoak.

The £7.6 million purpose-built care home which will provide residential, nursing and dementia care, and short-term respite care for up to 80 older people in Harrow, is due to open in early 2018.

Justin Daley, construction project manager for Care UK, said: “We were delighted to be able to collaborate with St George’s Catholic Primary School on a lovely art project to brighten up our hoardings. This is the second time pupils from the local school have joined us on site, so it was great to welcome them back to see how the project has progressed since their visit a few months ago, and of course to see their pictures displayed. We look forward to inviting St George’s Catholic Primary School back to Buchanan Court and working with them on future projects.”

Shirley Sexton, class teacher at the school, added: “We were thrilled when Care UK asked us to be part of their exciting new venture here in Harrow. The children had a great time creating the artwork and love seeing it displayed on their walk to school each day.”

Alun Williams, construction manager at Castleoak, said: “Castleoak is committed to engaging with local communities so we were more than happy to invite pupils to creatively decorate our hoarding. They’ve done a fantastic job and we’re really pleased with the site’s new look.”

The new care home, which will feature 80 en-suite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. It will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities and will include its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
