Local school adopts a care home

October 24th 2019

Care UK’s Oakfield Croft has joined forces with St Mary’s Primary School, ahead of the care home opening its doors in February 2020.

The Adopt a Care Home scheme, which is run by the local council, enables people living in care homes to become more involved in their local community, to feel better about themselves, forge intergenerational links and to break down the stigma which might be associated with conditions like dementia.

Adopt a Care Home was first trialled in a care home in Manchester, and following the pilot scheme’s success, Oakfield Croft was keen to be involved. Once the home opens, intergenerational relationships between residents and local school children will be developed and nurtured.

Daniel Cole, home manager of Oakfield Croft, said: “We’re so proud that St Mary’s Primary School has decided to adopt us as part of the scheme. This relationship will provide therapeutic benefits to the residents, allowing them to be more involved in the local area, as well as providing valuable lessons for the students. It will also break down the stigma of dementia at an earlier age, which will lead to greater understanding of the condition in the future.

“We know that this new relationship will be beneficial and lots of fun for all involved!”

Due to open in February 2020, the purpose-built care home, which will feature 60 ensuite bedrooms, has been designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities and will include its own cinema, hairdressing salon and coffee shop.

Oakfield Croft will deliver a full range of residential and nursing care for older people, including short-term respite care and specialist care for people living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
