A care home in Horsham has taken the top spot in a festive baking competition.
Sharon Haylett, Chef at Care UK’s Skylark House, on St Marks Lane, entered the nationwide Care UK baking competition with a cake inspired by the classic Christmas film The Snowman – and was awarded first place.
The Christmas cake competition saw over 120 Care UK care homes across the UK invited to submit their extra special bakes, all inspired by the festive season.
Residents at Skylark House were asked to vote on the care home’s cake design, and The Snowman theme was chosen, with many residents sharing happy memories of watching the film at this time of year with their children and grandchildren.
Sharon’s winning bake featured the iconic image of the Snowman and the boy flying above the clouds on top of the cake. A wintery scene completed the design, featuring penguins and Christmas trees, made out of marzipan, and iced gingerbread houses.
Dorota Woloszyn, Home Manager at Skylark House, said: “We’re very proud to have won Care UK’s Christmas cake competition. Sharon is an incredibly talented chef and a huge asset to our team here at Skylark house. We were thrilled to see her creative cooking abilities acknowledged with first place in this competition.
“The residents were excited to see their idea come to life. Our design not only looked fantastic, but tasted great too. I’m sure Sharon will ensure we all enjoy plenty more festive treats this Christmas.
“We’d like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas from all of us at Skylark House.”
