I’ve managed care homes before I joined Care UK and was even an area manager, overseeing a number of homes. I’ve also worked as a ‘turnaround manager’ too – helping care homes to gain regulatory compliance – so I’ve lots of experience in care homes.
There’s a lot to do when you’re a home manager, but the best bit is having a coffee with the residents and chatting with them. When I can I also join in with activities because it’s wonderful seeing residents enjoying themselves – after all, that’s why we do what we do. I love seeing happy residents living fulfilling lives in our warm and friendly home.
My background is in mental health nursing. I moved to Priors House when it opened as I wanted to be part of a forward-thinking organisation. It was quite a challenge moving from being a unit manager to becoming deputy manager, but I’m really enjoying each day. No two days are the same, and every new challenge presents an opportunity to learn something new.
Priors House is a fantastic home and I’m very proud to work here. We’re delivering excellent care and I’m determined for us to get an ‘outstanding’ rating from the CQC!
Whatever role I’ve done in my career, I’ve always been focused on ensuring that people have the best experience. I love seeing the smiles on residents’ faces when the lifestyle team put on the daily events. We have movie nights and parties. For the royal wedding we had fizz, wedding cake and wore fancy hats. Everyone has a lot of fun. It’s wonderful to see how relaxed and happy residents’ families are when they visit. People go through so many challenging emotions when they look for care for a loved one so seeing them happy is priceless.
I’m really looking forward to learning more about care needs and getting involved in our community events and information sessions, as well as becoming a Dementia Champion.
Before joining Priors House I worked in customer services in a retirement village, which was all about helping residents to enjoy every day. I decided to move because I wanted to be more involved in helping people and connecting with individual residents – to be more at the heart of their care.
I love getting to know all the residents and hearing their stories and knowing that I’m having a positive impact on their life. I also enjoy having the chance to bring a smile to residents’ faces – even if it’s with a small gift that shows I’m thinking of them. Looking ahead, I’d like to organise an exhibition of residents’ art work as I run an art class at the home and we’ve got lots of fantastic pieces to show off.
I’ve not worked in the care sector before, so joining Care UK, and Priors House, in mid 2014 was a turning point for me. It’s enabled me to learn new skills and interact with people I would never have met and supported.
I love hearing feedback from the residents after lunch. They’re honest and I get lots of ideas for ways to improve and tailor menus! Outside of work I also enjoy cooking, as well as watching films and following Formula One.
