Space hoppers raise smiles and money for Sports Relief at Paisley Court nursing home

Home news

The team at Care UK’s Paisley Court nursing home took up the Sports Relief challenge with a weekend of challenges and races that included a marathon in Spain.

Members of the kitchen, maintenance and administration teams competed against nurses and carers from the home’s four units, much to the amusement of the 60 residents.

Manager Allison Kennie said: “We had some very competitive space hopper races, as well as traditional three-legged and egg and spoon races, all of which were held on a circuit that could be seen throughout the home giving those residents who couldn’t come and enjoy the sunshine a perfect view from inside.”

As well as races sponsored by Allison, staff each gave £1 to wear sports clothes to work and residents and their families also joined in the fundraising.

Kitchen Assistant Ian Smith went more than 26 extra miles for Sports Relief when he completed the Barcelona Marathon in 4hrs and 28 min in a blistering 77 degree heat!  The total raised in the home was £68.10.

Finishing his seventh marathon, Ian said: “I enjoy running and mostly complete marathons for fun.  It was a coincidence that Sport Relief was happening at the same time as the Barcelona Marathon – at the last minute, some of the staff offered to sponsor me for £1 each – it was a fun way to raise a little bit of extra money for such a worthwhile cause.”

Allison said: “Everyone worked hard and had fun and not only did we raise £68.10 but the residents and relatives had a great time – so much so that we are planning more sports events to celebrate Wimbledon and the Olympics.”
