Mayor and MP launch new dementia service

Home news

Local MP Jeremy Wright and our Mayor Dave Shilton marked the opening of our brand new 20 bed dementia service here at Kenilworth House by cutting a yellow ribbon.

The new, purpose built unit will offer specialist dementia care for our residents in a safe, secure and stimulating environment. It has specially trained staff and an environment tailored specifically for people living with dementia.

Mr Wright, who founded the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia, said: "I am delighted to see this new facility opening and to see companies like Care UK, who own Kenilworth Grange, taking the initiative and investing in provision of this kind.

"The number of people suffering from dementia in the UK is likely to reach a million within a decade and we need to prepare the country to be able to treat and care for sufferers in the best way possible. I am very pleased that the work of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Dementia, and many others who campaign on the subject, has already had considerable impact and that the Government will be doubling its annual research funding into dementia to £66m by 2015."

The service is part of Kenilworth House care home and we used our April open day to launch the new facility. Visitors were able to look around our home which provides care for 60 residents, and talk to staff.

Mubo Akinyele, a nurse in the new unit, said: "This service offers person centred-care and can provide residents with the increased attention they need.

"As time goes on more people will develop dementia, so having a place like this means better care can be given to them. We have all been given a lot of training in order to provide the best service possible for residents.

"My job is to get to know the people living here, so I can support them according to their specific needs."

Carol Adams, who also works in the home, said: "This is the only facility of its kind in Kenilworth, which makes it an asset to the town."

Our manager, Margaret Mcatamney who is looking forward to welcoming new residents to the unit said she was very proud of the new facility.
