Whitford Gardens’ street party brings Mitcham community together for Jubilee

Home news

Whitford Gardens, Mitcham, will be filled with the sound of celebrations as residents and the team at Cumberland nursing home  join with the community to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with a street party on Sunday 3rd June.

Activities Coordinator Rachel Yeoman and her colleague Laura Shepherd are busy working with residents to ensure the home’s car park, at the end of Whitford Gardens, is awash with red, white and blue to welcome visitors to the home.

Rachel said: “Everyone is very excited about the party. We are inviting residents from around our local neighbourhood and we would like the community to join us in our day of celebration.”

As well as a barbecue, there will be entertainers, stalls, jubilee-themed cakes decorated by the residents and a kiddie’s corner to keep younger visitors entertained during the celebrations, which run between 12.30pm and 3.30pm.

Home Manager Elaine Robson said: “The Queen is an important figure to many of our residents. They have grown up with her, had their children and grandchildren at the same times and they hold her in high regard.

“Royal events always trigger memories of other jubilees and weddings and the more we talk to residents about their past and their experiences, the more we understand them and we can tailor their care and activities to really suit them.”
