Our chef’s menus really sparkle!

Each month, Care UK runs an award competition across its 88 homes to find those people who have Gone the Extra Mile (GEMs) and the team at Haven Lodge were delighted to find out that Chef Karl Box is now officially a GEM.

Karl was nominated by residents, relatives and his colleagues thanks to his upbeat nature and his willingness to go the extra mile on a daily basis.

Home Administrator Debbie Abeyratne said: “Two people, whose relatives have recently moved to the home, nominated him because he had spent so much time talking to the family about the residents’ likes and dislikes and explaining how he ensures that residents get a tasty and nutritionally balanced diet.

“He will always try and cook people’s favourite food and if anyone is feeling a bit low he will make them special treats.”

Karl also gives up his own time and comes back in to bake cakes and help out with functions that are taking place while he is off duty.

As well as his winning smile and manner, Karl is also popular for his cream cakes. Debbie added: “He makes the most beautiful cream slices and cream horns and fruits of the forest tarts for our regular residents and relatives meeting, and I know they are greatly appreciated, not just because they always add their thanks to the meeting minutes, but because there are only ever crumbs left!”
