Aberdeen care home manager wins national award for helping residents to live fulfilled lives

The manager of an Aberdeen care home has won a national award for her commitment and dedication to helping residents at Care UK’s Tor-na-Dee care home lead fulfilling lives.

Maureen Barrett, who has managed the care home since it opened in 2008, was nominated for the Fulfilling Lives award by residents, relatives and fellow team members who work at the home in Milltimber.

Resident Kathleen Barclay and her daughter Lillias nominated the home, not only for its care, but for the effort the team had put into creating a beautiful and useful environment.

Residents love being outside and recently Maureen and the team created an accessible and sheltered area in the ground where residents can sit and enjoy a cup of tea with friends or relatives.

Kathleen told judges that she is delighted with the new summer house. She said: “This has been a great initiative. It looks great and it makes the garden more useable because now, no matter what the weather is like, we can enjoy the garden.”

Other residents and relatives praised the team for the range of activities it runs, including keeping chickens, visits from therapy dogs and trips, as well as raising funds for local charities.

Maureen, who received her award at a ceremony in Oxford on Thursday 14th November, said: “I have a wonderful team, many of whom also received nominations. We all work very hard to understand each of our residents’ interests, histories and personalities so that we can offer personalised care and activities.

“If someone is happy and active, we can help them stay independent and fulfilled and that is a great reward in itself for us as a team.”

The awards were open to all Care UK homes and wellbeing centres across the country.
