The award is given to the carer who goes the extra mile to provide the best possible care. Angels must be known for their positive attitude, cheerfulness and willingness to take time to listen and talk whenever someone needs them.
Vera Burrows, who nominated Emma, said that her husband had difficulty expressing himself, Jack could only say “go go go” due to a severe stroke but: “Emma always knew or quickly discovered what he wanted to say. She did this with professional commitment and a sense of humour which dovetailed nicely with his highly-developed sense of seeing the funny side of things.
“It is so special for me to know that Emma received this award following Jack’s death on the 25 October; my sadness is that he did not get to know she had won.
“Whilst always approaching Jack empathetically, Emma was never condescending and tried to develop and maintain Jack’s independence. She challenged him constructively but was sensitive to the situations in which he needed help and always provided this readily.”
The award was presented at Care UK’s Residential Care Services awards dinner at the Heythrop Park resort on Thursday 20 November. Belinda Moore, Care UK’s marketing and communication director was on the judging panel and said: “We all know that we would want absolutely the best care possible for our own relatives, and Emma is an example of this kind of dedication in action. She richly deserves this award and I am delighted that we can celebrate with her.”
Emma, who has worked at Station House for 11 years, said after the ceremony: “I love my work and I am really thrilled to be given this award. What makes it so special is that I have a lasting memory of Jack and I’m so please I did him proud. Jack will be looking down on me now with the biggest smile. His family are absolutely thrilled that I received this award.”
