It’s all in a name: Kingston pupils lend a helping hand to Care UK

Home news

Pupils from Robin Hood Primary School were called upon to lend a helping hand to their new neighbours, when they were invited to take part in a competition to name three of the suites at Care UK’s new care home, Sherwood Grange.

The school’s classes put their heads together to come up with a list of names that have cultural reference to them and the local area, which were then whittled down to the top three by the home manager at Sherwood Grange, Rick Mayne.

When the home opens on the corner of Kingston Vale and Robin Hood Lane next year, the suites will be known as ‘Beverley Brook’, ‘Cambridge’ and ‘Forest’, named after the brook flowing through Richmond Park, the pub formerly located at the Robin Hood gate entrance of Richmond Park and one of the school’s houses, respectively.

As a thank you to all who took part, Care UK presented Robin Hood Primary School with £150 of vouchers to buy new books for all pupils to enjoy – along with some festive chocolates, just in time for Christmas.

Home manager, Rick Mayne, said: “As we gear up to welcome our first residents to Sherwood Grange in April 2016, the all-important naming of the suites within the care home was a priority, and we thought this presented an excellent opportunity to work with Robin Hood Primary School and to get to know our neighbours a little better. The choice of names from the pupils were all of a very high quality and we’re really pleased with the chosen three names.”

Deputy headteacher, Julie Smith commented: “The suite naming activity not only gave the pupils an excellent opportunity to learn all about the new care home here in Kingston, but it also encouraged them to think about the history and geography of their local area when seeking out inspiration for their entries. The activity was enjoyed by all the pupils here and we hope to do more with Rick and the team at Sherwood Grange in the future.”

The new three-storey care home, which will feature 59-ensuite bedrooms, has been sensitively designed to provide a high quality environment for the provision of full time residential care, specialist dementia care, nursing, and short term respite care.

Designed to enable its residents to live active and fulfilled lives while also promoting independence, the care home will incorporate space for hobby and leisure activities and will include its own cinema, hairdressing salon and café.
