Worcestershire couple celebrate platinum anniversary

Home news

A Worcestershire couple celebrate 70 years of marriage with a party at a local care home.

Tom Morris and his wife Edna, who married in 1946 at Weoley Castle in Birmingham, were joined by family, friends and the Care UK team as they celebrated their platinum wedding anniversary.

Tom, aged 93, who lives in Perry Manor care home on Charles Hasting Way, met his wife Edna, aged 90, in 1941 at the grocers Singletons in Selly Oak where they both worked. Tom then served in the Royal Navy for four years during World War II, before moving to Hertfordshire to work as a farmer. They returned to the Midlands in 1964 and set up their own grocer’s business in the Black Country town of Old Hill. Both Tom and Edna share a passion for ballroom dancing, a hobby they continued into their 80s.

The couple continued to live together until 2014 when Edna’s health deteriorated and she moved into Brook Court care home in Kidderminster. Tom moved into Perry Manor care home in Worcester in the same year.

Charles Weller, customer relations manager at Perry Manor, said: “We like to make all our residents feel at home by keeping to any traditions they have and taking the time to celebrate special occasions such as anniversaries.

“We simply couldn’t miss the opportunity to raise a glass to Tom and Edna. Tom visits Edna every Sunday, and it is a pleasure to see a couple that are so close after 70 years.”

Perry Manor is a state-of-the-art care home which provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care.
