Perry Manor joined by local students for World Read Aloud Day

Home news

Perry Manor was joined by local students when it celebrated in this year’s World Read Aloud Day.

Residents at Perry Manor enjoyed a day of literature-based activities with students from Lypard Grange Primary School.

The pupils from Key Stage 1 read to the residents and took part in interactive reading sessions.

The residents enjoyed a free screening of a short film created by Care UK featuring international Storyteller Laureate, Taffy Thomas MBE.

In the film, Taffy, the patron of The Society for Storytelling, provided his top tips and advice for reading and explained the therapeutic benefits of reading aloud to older people.

Home manager, Katherine Matthews, explained why Perry Manor was one of several Care UK care homes that took part in World Read Aloud Day: “It may come as a surprise to many just how beneficial reading aloud can be for older people; particularly those living with dementia.

Here at Perry Manor interactive reading sessions are very important to us as they help to engage residents and encourage communication.

“We had a brilliant day of storytelling with the students from Lypard Grange Primary School. The residents really enjoyed being read to and shared their own stories with the younger generation.”
