Opera dream comes true at Elizabeth Lodge

Home news

A resident at Elizabeth Lodge received a special visit from a professional opera singer.

Celebrations were in full swing at Elizabeth Lodge when resident Jo was treated to a special opera performance from professional soprano Nazan Fikret.

Born in London in 1927, Jo always had a strong interest in the arts, from poetry writing to music, and a passion for the opera. A few weeks ago, the team at Elizabeth Lodge organised an opera evening which included a live screening from Glyndebourne of Jo’s favourite opera, Madama Butterfly, to make her dream of seeing a live performance come true.

Nazan, an opera singer soon to be performing at Glyndebourne, saw a news article about Jo’s story and offered to visit the home to sing famous opera songs and classics from ‘The Sound of Music’ – another residents’ favourite.

Nazan said: “I grew up in Enfield, and when I found out about Jo’s heart-warming story, I instantly felt a connection. I visited Elizabeth Lodge as a child to sing in front of the residents and I have fond memories of that time, so it was great to go back to the home for an afternoon of musical fun.

“I am thrilled I was able to make Jo’s dream come true!”

The home also treated the residents to a garden party  specially prepared by Elizabeth Lodge’s chefs.

Michelle Sampang, home manager at Elizabeth Lodge, said: “Every resident is different, and we like to make everyone feel at home here at Elizabeth Lodge by getting to know them and doing everything we can to make their wishes come true. We were thrilled when Nazan got in touch with us after our first opera evening and offered to sing for the residents.

“Everyone had a lovely evening, and Jo enjoyed every minute of the performance. We would like to say a big thank you to Nazan for joining us and making the day so special for the residents.”
