The team at Broadwater Lodge welcomed local people to enjoy Care Home Open Day, a countrywide initiative set up to develop lasting relationships between care homes and local communities, and to dispel common myths about care home life.
This year’s theme celebrated the role of arts within care, which is important in encouraging residents’ self-expression, and helps to create meaningful experiences.
Residents and visitors enjoyed a party with the local community at their onsite farm, where the children were treated to pony rides on resident pony, Cookie, and guests took part in farm-themed arts and crafts.
Special guest, actress Penelope Keith was also in attendance, to the delight of residents who remember her starring in British sitcom ‘The Good Life’. She chatted with residents about their lives and her work, as well as viewing residents’ artwork and the farm.
As part of a nationwide competition for all Care UK homes, Broadwater Lodge developed a work of art in the lead up to the open day, which was unveiled at the event.
Angela Bookham, home manager at Broadwater Lodge, said: “Everyone at Broadwater Lodge had an amazing time celebrating with the local community for Care Home Open Day 2019. This year’s theme of ‘Celebrating Arts in Care’ was a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase all the brilliant activities we get up to on a daily basis here at Broadwater Lodge – with Cookie the pony a particular hit!
“The people of Godalming have always been welcoming to us, so it was great to host everyone for a day of fun in the sun. I’d also like to say a special thank you to Penelope Keith for joining us – we hope you enjoyed your visit as much as our guests and the residents did!”
