“Her dedication is exceptional” – Aberdeen care home nurse makes the final in national awards

Home news

A care home in Aberdeen is celebrating after one of its team members was named as a finalist for a national care award.

Jenny Coutts, nurse at Tor-Na-Dee care home, on North Deeside Road, has made it to the final stage in the ‘Nurse of the Year’ category in the Scottish Care Home Awards 2019. The national awards recognise the hard work and dedication of both individuals and teams across care homes in Scotland.

Jenny joined the Tor-Na-Dee team in 2012 and has since become the home’s dementia champion. In addition to providing advanced training to her colleagues, Jenny also helps families understand their older relatives better, and has made important changes to the dementia suite to create ‘destination areas’, including an office space, which gives residents living with dementia a sense of purpose through meaningful tasks.

Relatives and colleagues praised the positive change of atmosphere as a result of Jenny’s work. One relative said: “Jenny is a breath of fresh air in the world of dementia. […] She goes above and beyond […] and makes a positive difference to the dementia suite”. A GP, who works closely with the Tor-Na-Dee team, added: “Her dedication is exceptional, tireless and inspiring to encounter”.

Maureen Barrett, home manager at Tor-Na-Dee, said: “We are thrilled that Jenny has been named as a finalist in the ‘Nurse of the Year’ category for the Scottish Care Home Awards.

“Jenny always goes the extra mile for the residents and is incredibly passionate about her job. She is very caring, and her attitude is nothing short of extraordinary. I would like to thank Jenny and the rest of the team for all their hard work in making Tor-Na-Dee a wonderful place to live – every single person is such a valuable part of the team and I really appreciate their commitment to the home.

“We’d like to wish luck to everyone who made the finals, and we’ll be keeping our fingers crossed for Jenny!”

Tor-Na-Dee provides a range of services from residential and specialist dementia care, to short-term respite and sensitive end of life care. Recently refurbished with beautifully designed décor and tranquil colour schemes, the home offers bright and cheery lounges, a cinema and bar, beautiful gardens with a summerhouse, and a private dining room to entertain family and friends.
