Down to a fine art – local students join Cheadle care home for the world’s largest drawing festival

Home news

Residents at a local care home picked up their pencils and welcomed Cheadle Primary School for The Big Draw Festival 2019.

Care UK’s Abney Court, in Abney Hall Park, joined in the celebrations by creating works of art around this year’s theme, ‘drawn to life’. Residents and pupils decided to focus on woodland nature and had a great time drawing trees and animals to display around the home.

Launched in 2000 as part of the ‘Campaign for Drawing’, The Big Draw promotes drawing as a tool for learning, expression and invention, and has encouraged over four million people to get arty since its inception. This year’s theme celebrates the benefits of creative activities, especially drawing, on health and wellbeing. 2019 also marks the bicentenary of John Ruskin’s birth, founder of the Guild of St George, the charitable education trust behind the initiative.

Helen Parry, home manager at Abney Court, said: “The Big Draw Festival was a huge success, and we were delighted that children from Cheadle Primary School came along to take part.

“Art is an accessible pastime for all ages, and many residents at Abney Court have a keen interest in creative activities. The Big Draw was a fantastic opportunity to tap into happy memories while facilitating communication, and everyone enjoyed learning from each other and sharing their drawing tips!”

“We’d like to thank Cheadle Primary School for coming along, and we can’t wait to welcome them back soon for some more arty fun.”

Abney Court has been designed to deliver the very best standards of care and to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives. The home provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities and includes its own cinema, hair salon and café.
